What is a nurse practitioner and what do they do?

A nurse practitioner is an advanced practice registered nurse that has obtained a graduate level education that prepared that individual to provide a scope of services across the health wellness-illness continuum. Nurse practitioners are formally educated in advanced physical exams, advanced pathophysiology, and advanced pharmacology.

Nurse practitioners take medical histories, perform physical exams, and order and interpret diagnostic studies such as laboratory work. By doing this, your nurse practitioner will be able to diagnose you and develop an individualized treatment plan, follow up course, and referral if needed. A treatment plan may include holistic interventions, education, prescriptive medications such as antibiotics, and/or referral to specialties such as orthopedics, general surgery, or pain management.

According to Federal and State law, a nurse practitioner cannot prescribe DEA Scheduled I or II drugs/medications in an outpatient setting including clinics and homes. Common medications that are labeled DEA Scheduled II drugs are Norco (hydrocodone), Adderall (amphetamine), Duragesic/sublimaze (Fentanyl), Morphine, Methadone, and Dilaudid (hydromorphone). This is a limited list that does not include all DEA Scheduled II medications. If a patient needs to be prescribed one of these medications, they will be referred to the appropriate physician.
